Remote GSM module monitoring and Photovoltaic system control

In this paper, we are interested in Photovoltaic systems (PV) which generate electricity from solar radiation. More precisely, our contribution consists in the implementation of a remote monitoring and control PV system for standalone applications located in an open environment. The novelty of our approach relies on the fact that it is operational even in the case of a huge spread deployment of PV system. Our solution aims to be a good replacement of manually module checking which is not recommended because of time-consuming, less accuracy and potentially dangerous to the operator. The proposed solution consists in two essential parts. First, we suggest robust and reliable measurements and control system based on a star architecture of a group of sensor network. The supervisory control system is assumed by a microcontroller chip and a human-machine interface (HMI). A software is designed and developed for interacting and managing remote sensor systems by applying LabVIEW, a virtual instrument platform. Then, we introduce, as a communication technology, a full duplex digital system using the infrastructure of mobile radio system. The result of our demonstration shows that the system can monitor and control the remote communication between the monitoring center and the remote PV station. Thus, the remote monitoring functions are realized in real-time.

10 Devising a solar powered standalone vehicle using GSM communication network

Devising a solar powered standalone vehicle using GSM communication network
This paper presents the technical construction of a standalone vehicle controlled by GSM communication network. The designed GSM based solar powered vehicle could be operated from almost anywhere under GSM network which is powered by solar energy using 5 watt photo voltaic (PV) panel, stored in 3 similar 4V rechargeable batteries. The operation commences with a call generated from a cell phone which is auto received by another phone stalked in the vehicle motor driver. In the course of a call, if any of the buttons, 2, 4, 6 or 8, is pressed a tone corresponding to the button pressed is heard at the other end of the transmission which is called Dual Tone Multiple Frequency (DTMF) tone. The received tone in the cell phone at vehicle end is processed by a set of relays. These relayed signals are sent to the motor driver IC (L293D) which drives the motor forward, reverse, right or left. Most importantly as the car will be running by solar energy, so the vehicle can be sent to a long distance not worrying about the charge of the battery, since it accumulates the greater portion of the energy required from the external PV panel that absorbs and converts sunlight to generate the driving power, though there will be DC battery as a backup.

19 Palm-print recognition based on spectral domain

Palm-print recognition based on spectral domain statistical features extracted from enhanced image

In this paper, a feature extraction algorithm for palm-print recognition is proposed based on statistical features of two-dimensional discrete Fourier transform (2D-DFT), which efficiently exploits the local spatial variations in a palm-print image. First, adaptive median filtering followed by Top-Hat transform is employed on a given palm-image to obtain palm-line enhancement by reducing the effect of noise and lighting variations. Unlike conventional median filtering, adaptive median filtering operates only on pixels, which are not structurally aligned and can preserve detail while performing overall smoothing operation. The entire enhanced image is segmented into several small spatial modules and 2D-DFT is performed on each module. Instead of considering all DFT coefficients, a set of statistical features are extracted in the spectral domain, which drastically reduces the feature dimension and precisely captures the detail variations within the palm-print image. From our extensive experimentations on different palm-print databases, it is found that the performance of the proposed method in terms of recognition accuracy and computational complexity is superior to that of some of the recent methods.

38 Electrification of streets of Dhaka city using solar and piezoelectric energy

Electrification of streets of Dhaka city using solar and piezoelectric energy

This research paper carries out a proposal to implement an efficient way to electrify the streets of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, using solar power. Recently, government has launched a project named “Solar Photovoltaic-Powered LED (Light Emitting Diode) Street Lighting” to electrify the streets of Dhaka using only solar panels. Under the prevailing project, 122 LED lights, each of 30W are installed to electrify approximately 2 km streets. But after implementation, it has been found that 60-100W LED light is required for adequately illuminating the streets which will allow the ADB fund to cover only 250-300 km streets. Our proposal is to use the solar panels implemented in this project more efficiently and to carry out a realistic experimental approach to enhance the solar output power to a significant level with the application of solar concentrator and piezoelectric energy harvesting circuit. The method is arranged using `Double Sun Technology'. A remarkable enhancement in the output power is achieved with this method. Rather than using only a solar panel, the output power increases by 12.14% by using a photovoltaic (PV) panel with two flat mirrors as concentrator. To implement the project more efficiently, the concept of piezoelectricity have been introduced. In this paper, piezoelectric-based energy-harvesting technology is applied to generate electricity from roadways. The piezoelectric energy harvesting circuit was designed and simulated in PSPICE. A voltage doubler and a bridge rectifier were wired to the equivalent circuit model of the piezoelectric materials. The vibration present on the roadways from the movement of the vehicles was applied in the form of voltage to the energy harvesting circuit. The goal of this experiment is to investigate whether piezoelectricity would be able to provide sufficient source of voltage to charge the parent battery in case of rainy or cloudy days.

This allows an individual to check the medical parameters such as Blood glucose level, Blood pressure, Heart beat, Body temperature, Height, Weight using appropriate sensors after swiping the smart card of the person in the smart card reader which is interfaced to the microcontroller. After the check, the money for the particular test is transferred from the smart card. Then the health conditions are sent to the person's mobile phone via GSM. The entire database is stored in the main server. The main server is considered as a common healthcare monitoring system which is maintained by a separate health care unit from which, physical advises are sent to the persons mobile number. Also it allows us to access the health parameters from anywhere by swiping the smart card in the smart card reader The proposed method of remote health care monitoring system may help to reduce the cost of the healthcare and to simultaneously improve the quality of the healthcare. It also allows an individual to fix appointment for the particular doctor. This will reduce the time to be spent in hospitals and allows consumers can maintain their own health and wellness. Care givers can more quickly react to the medical emergencies of elders. Trainers can analyze trainee's fitness level. It is a non-invasive approach and will provide real time monitoring.

43 A GSM based low cost weather monitoring system for solar and wind energy generation

A GSM based low cost weather monitoring system for solar and wind energy generation

Renewable Energy is a pressing need in the 21st century as non-renewable sources are no longer fit for our energy needs. This is especially important in a country like India, where supply to demand ratio is very low. In this paper, we intend to identify the geographical areas for solar and wind energy generations at low cost. It is achieved by monitoring atmospheric weather conditions, such as temperature, humidity, wind speed and light intensity. Our design is based on remotely operated system with sensors, which gathers weather information and transmits measured values to the ground. In our research, we have considered a number of options to device atmospheric weather monitoring system at low cost, long lasting and durable for extreme weather conditions. The cost of the system is estimated to be nearly thirty dollars. It is highly reliable and deployable, and is a very useful utility in a country like India. The system can be easily deployed at areas to keep track of continuous climatic changes. The system is operated by battery, and is expected to run with a long life span, because of the system optimizations done for maximum power savings. Our system weighs only less than 150 gm, and is easily floatable and recoverable with the help of a simple Hydrogen balloon.

44 Design of Arduino-based communication agent for rural Indian microgrids

Design of Arduino-based communication agent for rural Indian microgrids

This paper explains the design of a communication system, using an Arduino microcontroller and GSM Module and its functions / associated components to be implemented in a microgrid. The microgrid control and coordination infrastructure has been realized as a hierarchical multi-agent system (MAS) comprising of the DG agents, the Mu agent and the D agent. The Communication (Mu) Agent acts as a link between the lower-level microgrid agents (distributed energy resources (DERs), the load, the storage and the utility grid) which provide the required digital parameter inputs, and the Control Agent comprising of the Cloud. Data storage, analytics and control commands are generated based on the rule engine updates given by the Utility Service Provider (USP) to the Cloud. The microgrid side input data are converted into appropriate GPRS signals within the Arduino. The specific functions that enable this conversion are elucidated as pseudocode. Further, the cloud control commands are sent back to the various microgrid-side agents via the Mu agent as GPRS signals. The communication strategy has been explained in detail and has been implemented using Arduino keeping in mind system costs, ease of operability and maintenance.

45 Effective load management and unethical monitoring for heavy duty vehicles

Effective load management and unethical monitoring for heavy duty vehicles using embedded technology

In speedy moving world, mainly accidents are occurring due to over loaded heavy duty vehicles. To meet the state of the art problem we have to develop a new setup with high accuracy, and cheat free mechanisms has to be adopted. Devices designed have to be even fast and convenient. The devices that are available in the market are much prone to errors. The electronic truck scale is much more applied to weighing measurement systems [1] in all walks of life. The main problem with that of the existing setup is that the fabrication and that the devices values could be easily altered. Owners of the heavy duty vehicles do such things for mere profit but the problem is that when the driver of the overloaded vehicle is not in a position to have control over the vehicle, which results in road accidents. A perfect system required to have a control over the problem, in proposed system, many cheating methods are analysed and anti cheating monitoring system of the electronic truck scale is designed. The added advantage of our setup is that the information about the accident is also sent o the owner and the nearby emergency centre using GSM and GPS. According to a survey made more than 73%of the highway accidents are due to over loaded vehicles and we assure that our proposal satisfies our requirements.
